Chai: one tea, many benefits

Chai, that spicy, warm, creamy, comfort drink.  Wonderful hot or over ice, with so many variations, it is easy to see why chai is so well-loved and consumed across the globe.  The basic premise of chia is tea, spices, and herbs, the combination of those few components create a sumptuous warming drink that is as good tasting as it is good for you.  Some of the benefits that chia has been given credit to include improving digestion, enhances the immune system, fights inflammation and has antioxidant properties. It has also been suggested that chai has antibacterial and anti-cancer properties.  Any healthy, delicious drink that may help keep cancer at bay and improves overall health and well-being is always welcome in my home.

Black Tea

Most chai recipes start with black tea, a known powerful anti-oxidant, that may protect LDL cholesterol, helping prevent cardiovascular disease.  The spices that make up chai’s unique flavor and aroma also add a powerful mix to promote a healthy body.

Cardamom

This seed can be found in many Tibetan medicines, it aids in digestion and supports the immune system.  Plus, it helps detoxify the body, improve circulation and may also fight respiratory allergies.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon, that wonderful spicy fragrant kitchen staple, has wonderful digestive properties and  also helps to balance blood sugar.  Research has shown that cinnamon has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant effects.

Clove

Clove helps digestion, but it also has pain relieving properties and antibacterial action.

Fennel

A great source of antioxidants, Vitamin C, potassium and fiber. Fennel has also shown to have some anti-cancer effects.

Ginger

This wonderful root has many health benefits, ginger aids digestion, improves circulation, boosts the immune system and reduces inflammation, which can be especially helpful for people suffering from arthritis.

Nutmeg

This simple spice is used only sparingly in most diets, yet contributes greatly to over all health.   The spice is packed with beneficial components that include dietary  fiber, manganese, thiamin, vitamin B6, folate, copper, and magnesium.  Nutmeg has also been found to relieve pain, help with digestion, help with brain health, as a body detox, oral health, and helps one get a good night sleep.

 

Chai may not be the only tea to choose from, but with all these health benefits and amazing flavors, it is easy to see why it IS the drink of choice for millions of people all over the world.  The next time you have the time or the ability to enjoy a steaming, fragrant cup of chia, please do, your taste buds and your body will thank you.
